A vital part of Tinnitus UK’s mission is to push for greater scientific understanding of tinnitus.

An important part of this is making sure tinnitus is taken seriously by national research programmes, and collaborating to make sure the tinnitus community’s voice is heard.

That’s why we’re proud to announce that Tinnitus UK has joined Our Future Health, the UK’s largest ever health research programme, and an affiliate charity.

Affiliate charities share their expertise in the prevention, early detection and treatment of a wide range of conditions with Our Future Health. By joining forces, the charities are also able to shape the programme to ensure it is fit to enhance research into a huge variety of health conditions and diseases, including tinnitus.

What is Our Future health?

Our Future Health is the UK’s largest ever health research programme. It is designed to help everyone live longer and healthier lives through the discovery and testing of more effective approaches to prevention, earlier detection and treatment of diseases.

Our Future Health is inviting millions of people, from all backgrounds and from right across the UK to take part. Volunteers are providing information about their health and lifestyles to create an incredibly detailed picture that represents the whole of the UK.

By developing a more detailed understanding of what makes certain people more likely to develop a disease – plus what to look out for before any symptoms appear – Our Future Health has the potential to help researchers to develop far more effective approaches to both prevention and treatment.

Affiliate charities

Our Future Health is joining with many of the UK’s leading health research charities who are providing valuable support and expertise to help develop Our Future Health. They will make a big impact in allowing us to ultimately change the way we prevent, detect and treat diseases.

Tinnitus UK has joined an elite group of health charities, including Cancer Research UK and British Heart Foundation.

Alex Brooks-Johnson, CEO of Tinnitus UK, said, “People with tinnitus do not get the support they need, but this new collaboration with Our Future Health is a step to change that. Tinnitus impacts a considerable number of people and costs the NHS £750 million annually, but relatively little is known about it. Working closely with national programmes like this means the tinnitus community can be heard, and together we can start to understand the causes and solutions to tinnitus.”

Dr Raghib Ali, CEO and Chief Medical Officer of Our Future Health, said, “We’re thrilled to welcome Tinnitus UK as our newest affiliate charity partner. This is our first partnership with a charity that is solely dedicated to hearing conditions, which is a great opportunity for Our Future Health. With this partnership, Tinnitus UK are bringing their expertise in tinnitus research, so together we can ensure our research programme benefits everyone.

Expanding across the UK

This week, Our Future Health ran its first clinics in Northern Ireland. Taking place in Lisburn and Belfast, Our Future Health plans to expand to 25-30 locations from mid-2026, offering up to 40,000 appointment slots for volunteers across Northern Ireland.
