“I don’t want there to be no hope”
Sam has had tinnitus for a few years and spoke to us about his journey.
Sam spoke to us about his experience of living with tinnitus:
“I’m Sam, I’m 21 and I’ve had tinnitus for a few years now.
I’m a musician and at first I thought the noises I heard were because I’d had my headphones on too loud, or for too long. I went to my GP and they said it was a build-up of ear wax, so I went and had my ears cleaned – but nothing changed.
“I didn’t even know the word ‘tinnitus’ when I went looking online for answers. I thought I was this weird guy with a thing no one else had (no one had ever told me they had the same noises) but what I found was that this is really common – and there are loads of people like me.
“The Tinnitus UK website was great – and that’s where I found the number for their helpline. I was nervous calling, but they were so friendly and helpful. They gave me loads of information, practical things I could try. They showed me that there’s a community that I can share my journey with. I know I won’t have to face this alone; and that’s massively reassuring.”
