The European Tinnitus Course
Your questions answered
Each October, Tinnitus UK hosts the European Tinnitus Course. This year’s dates are Thursday 16 to Saturday 18 October 2025 at Birmingham’s Aston University. To help you find out whether the course is right for you, we asked our course faculty of tinnitus experts to give us the lowdown.
What is the European Tinnitus Course?
The European Tinnitus Course (ETC) is a three-day educational course presenting an up-to-date and comprehensive synthesis of the current scientific and clinical knowledge base for tinnitus. Although tinnitus is the main focus of the course, we also cover the basic facts and management strategies for disorders of sound tolerance (hyperacusis).
Who should attend the ETC?
The course is ideal for Audiologists who have completed their basic training and are just starting out – or are about to start – sub-specialising in tinnitus. The course is also valuable for ENT Surgeons, Audio Vestibular Physicians, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Auditory Scientists, and can act as a refresher course for more experienced Audiologists.
What can attendees expect to learn on the course?
The course covers common topics such as the definitions, pathophysiology and epidemiology of tinnitus. It also addresses more niche topics such as somatosensory tinnitus, acoustic shock and low frequency noise complaint. Both audiological and psychological management strategies are discussed in detail. The psychological management focuses on CBT and Acceptance-based therapy. The intention is to create and awareness and basic understanding of these approaches; the course does not offer a qualification in these therapies.
The course does not promote a single treatment technique: we are convinced that tinnitus is a heterogeneous condition and there is no current one-size-fits-all solution. We promote a multidisciplinary model of tinnitus management.

Do attendees need to have any prior knowledge?
Delegates are expected to have basic biomedical knowledge and, in particular, an understanding of auditory anatomy and physiology and audiometry. No prior knowledge of psychology is required.
How will the course be taught?
The course is predominantly lecture-based. There are practical sessions on mindfulness and relaxation. Delegates are encouraged to ask questions throughout the course, during or after the lectures and the last session of the course is a Q&A session. The faculty members are also resident on-site throughout the duration of the course and will be happy to discuss tinnitus outside the classroom.
Who’s delivering the course?
There are currently five course tutors: one ENT Surgeon, one Clinical Psychologist and three Audiologists. The Audiologists have different and complementary skills, including somatosensory tinnitus, tinnitus in association with post-traumatic stress disorder, tinnitus in childhood, tinnitus in association with skull base lesions and tinnitus management using cochlear implants.
Are any resources provided for attendees on the content of the course?
All lectures are available for delegates after the course. The course, however, is not recorded.
Have you had any feedback from previous attendees on how the course has helped them?
Here is a comment we received in 2024: “This event was a great success as it provided me with extensive education on ENT, consultation, and psychology, expanding my knowledge about tinnitus and how to provide good service to patients suffering from tinnitus”
