How to enjoy music safely this summer

Summer means festival season, outdoor gigs, and unforgettable nights with friends. Whether you’re heading to your local music venue or a stadium show, there’s nothing quite like experiencing live music.

At Tinnitus UK, we want everyone to enjoy those moments for years to come. That’s why this summer we’re continuing our work with musicians, festivals, and music fans to raise awareness of hearing health and simple ways to protect it.

As part of that work, we’re delighted to be attending Download Festival 2026, working alongside one of the UK’s biggest festivals to continue important conversations around hearing protection and long-term hearing health.

Live music should be enjoyed for life

Music is powerful. It brings people together, creates lifelong memories and can have a hugely positive impact on wellbeing.

But repeated exposure to loud sound can increase the risk of hearing damage and tinnitus, the perception of sounds such as ringing, buzzing or hissing with no external source.

The good news is that protecting your hearing doesn’t mean missing out on the experience.

Simple ways to protect your hearing

Wear hearing protection

High-quality earplugs can reduce sound levels while still allowing you to enjoy the music clearly. They’re designed to lower the volume without taking away the atmosphere.

Give your ears a break

If you can, step away from the speakers every so often and spend a few minutes in a quieter area.

Be mindful of volume

If you’re close enough that you need to shout to speak to someone next to you, you’re likely in a very loud environment. Moving back a little can make a real difference.

Protect children’s hearing

If you’re bringing younger music fans along, ear defenders or suitable hearing protection can help keep them safe while they enjoy the experience.

If you’re already experiencing tinnitus

You’re not alone. Millions of people in the UK live with tinnitus, and support is available.

Whether you’ve recently noticed ringing in your ears or have been living with tinnitus for years, Tinnitus UK offers trusted information, support groups, resources and a free confidential helpline.

Enjoy the music you love for years to come

Our message is simple: live music and hearing protection go hand in hand.

By making a few small changes today, you can help protect your hearing while continuing to enjoy festivals, gigs, and the artists you love for many summers to come.
