Tinnitus Awareness (for Psychologists & CBT-Accredited Therapists)
Questions answered
We asked James Jackson, the course trainer, to go into more detail about the event to let you know what to expect when you attend the course.
What is the course?
Tinnitus Awareness (for Psychologists & CBT-Accredited Therapists) is a one-day specialist training designed to help qualified CBT practitioners understand tinnitus and its implications for therapy. The course provides an in-depth overview of how tinnitus distress interacts with cognition, emotion, and behaviour – and how it can be conceptualised within familiar CBT frameworks. Participants will explore how tinnitus may present in clinical practice, how to adapt their existing models to support affected clients, and when referral or multidisciplinary collaboration is appropriate.
Who should attend?
This course is designed for:
- CBT-accredited therapists and psychologists (clinical, counselling, or health)
- Professionals working in NHS, private practice, or academia who may encounter tinnitus in their caseloads
It is particularly relevant for those wishing to increase confidence in recognising and responding to tinnitus-related issues within their existing therapeutic practice.
What can attendees expect to learn from the course?
By the end of the day, delegates will:
- Understand what tinnitus is, its mechanisms, and how it impacts patients’ emotional and cognitive wellbeing.
- Recognise how tinnitus-related distress fits within CBT models (e.g., vicious cycles of attention, appraisal, and avoidance).
- Reflect on how ACT and mindfulness principles can promote habituation and acceptance.
- Identify comorbidities (anxiety, depression, insomnia) and know when specialist referral is needed.
- Gain familiarity with common outcome measures used in tinnitus research and clinical practice.
- Appreciate the importance of collaborative working with audiology, ENT, and other professionals.
Do attendees need any prior knowledge?
Attendees should already be qualified or accredited CBT practitioners or psychologists with CBT training.
No prior experience with tinnitus is required – the course assumes clinical competence in CBT but provides the tinnitus-specific understanding needed to apply that knowledge effectively.
How will the course be taught?
The course will be delivered in person at Leeds Trinity University City Campus, through:
- Interactive lectures introducing tinnitus mechanisms, prevalence, and treatment pathways
- Case studies illustrating both straightforward and complex tinnitus presentations
- Group discussions and reflections linking tinnitus to delegates’ existing practice
- Collaborative exercises on referral decisions and multidisciplinary working
- Q&A and networking sessions for professional exchange and resource sharing
By the end of the day, delegates will leave confident in recognising tinnitus-related presentations, adapting their formulations appropriately, and navigating referral and collaboration pathways with audiologists and ENT services.
