Tinnitus can be triggered or made worse by stress, often things that are completely unrelated to our hearing. On this page, you can find suggestions for how to get help for some common tinnitus stressors.
Understanding tinnitus and stress
When we’re stressed, our brain becomes hyper-vigilant, meaning we become more aware of things around us. That means we’re more likely to hear tinnitus and it might even get louder. It’s our body’s natural way of warning about potential threats, called “triggers” or “stressors”.
Common triggers for tinnitus include:
- Financial worries or debt
- Bereavement and loss
- Medical discharge from the military
- Workplace challenges or job loss
- Physical illness or injury
- Mental health difficulties
Of course intrusive our tinnitus is likely to cause more stress… causing our tinnitus to become more intrusive. It’s a vicious cycle which can be difficult to break!
The good news is that by dealing with these triggers, our tinnitus can become less bothersome, intrusive, or may even go away altogether.
